1. SCHOLARHIP COMMITTEE
Goal:
- To raise $16 K + this fiscal year to give away bigger and/or more scholarships to students in need of financial support to attend college
- Award granted money to local middle and elementary schools serving Miramar and Pembroke Pines in support of a school project
- Host the annual STAR breakfast (Student Teacher Awards & Recognition) to present the monies awarded to students and schools as well as honor the teachers of the year of the Miramar Pembroke Pines elementary and secondary schools.
~To honor the outstanding teachers servicing our children in our area
~To award the scholarship recipients and grant schools
~To build relationship with our education community
~To bridge our business community to the education community
Action:
- Drawings at monthly membership Breakfasts and Business Card Exchanges using items donated from members
- Committee to collect on a regular basis at each event and turn in the monies to the chamber staff for accounting at the corresponding meeting
- Inform the Chamber office how many items will be in the drawing
- Designated person to count money with Chamber Staff Bookkeeper for accountability
- Initial paperwork prior to leaving breakfast, BCE, or event
- Staff person to handle money and make deposit
- Drawing at December 2006 Breakfast for a laptop
- Drawing at Sip and Taste event in March 3, 2007
- Drawing at Spring Breakfast April 12, 2007
- Campaign Donations
- During campaign year, candidates will receive a letter of explanation and invitation to donate left over campaign funds to the 501C3 and the worthy cause of investing in the young people of the community.
- Follow up phone calls are to be made per a committee member and chamber office. Office will coordinate with the volunteer on calls.
- Golf Committee has chosen the 501C3 scholarship committee as their charity of choice for this year
- Committee to work tournament drawing to raise designated funds for the 501c3
- 100% of the drawing will go to the 501 (c3)
- Auction will split the proceeds 50/50 between the (c3) and the (c6)
Basic Guidelines:
- Scholarships: Serve students that are residents of the Miramar Pembroke Pines cities, even if they attend an out of zone school. i.e.: magnet schools, etc.
- Monies are to leave the event with a chamber staff person only. Volunteers are not to take chamber money with them.
- Grants: Serving Miramar and Pembroke Pines elementary and middles schools only.
- All applications will be adjudicated per a committee of MPPR Chamber members
- Both scholarship and grant presentations will be made at the annual STAR breakfast.
2. Grant writing for the 501(c) (3)
Goal:
- To seek funding from a variety of sources to support the variety of activities of the 501 (c) (3)
Action:
- Jan 2007- It was determined that in the remaining 6 months of the 2006-07 Chamber fiscal year will serve as a grooming time to launch this effort.
- A grant team will be sought and the team will be educated on basic processes.
- A workshop will be sought to attend, and the team will be invited to attend to gain knowledge of the process.
- Agenda should include workshops that offer the student education on how to look for monies themselves. Keiser University already hosts a series so the scholarship committee would not have to re-invent the structure. This would be a win-win partnership.
- Research targeted information to use to build a library of options
- The target launch date to begin regular activity will be August 2007.
3. Partners in Education
Goal:
- To connect the business community with the education community in order to develop the next generation workforce
Action:
- Recruit a volunteer to chair this committee and build a team to facilitate the process of connecting the business member to a PIE program
- PIE program registration form already developed
- Committee simply markets the PIE program to the membership at large
- Business member makes a selection of which program to participate in
- Committee turns the form into the chamber office
- Chamber office makes a copy of the form for chamber records
- Chamber office turns the form over to the representative for the program of choice of the business member
- The program representative then is responsible for connecting the business member with the PIE program / school of choice
- The program representative is responsible for all processing, screening and orientation of the business member for the PIE program of choice
- Program selections include:
- Mentoring
- Shadowing
- Internship
- Police Athletic League – Miramar and Pembroke Pines
- Career Day
- Follow up phone calls are facilitate by committee members monthly to check on business partners
- Quarterly survey with schools is made in order to get feedback on how the PIE program is working
- Quarterly reporting is given to the chamber office for assessment
- PIE program adjustments are made as needed
4. Youth Chamber of Commerce - VISION
Goal:
- Create a venue that will offer Miramar Pembroke Pines high school juniors and seniors opportunities to develop their workforce knowledge and experience along with overall leadership training.
Action:
- Partner with AMPS Institute to take advantage of the student entrepreneurial program
- AMPS will be a liaison with the schools regarding registering this program on behalf of the chamber
- Partner with Leadership Broward to take advantage of the student leadership program already in existence and operating successfully
- Leadership XX has taken this endeavor on as their class project and will focus on the structuring of the foundation and initial promotion of the program
- Details of the plan of work for Leadership XX are attached to this document for full explanation of timeline
- A marketing piece is being produced by Leadership XX
- Leadership XX has named the youth group “VISION”
Guidelines:
- The VISION Advisory Council will include the following: Chamber President, Chamber Board Member, one Leadership XX representative, James AMPS, one student representative from each of the 5 high schools, one adult representative of each high school.
- Meeting dates and times are to be determined per initial meetings with the schools.
- The chamber office is the main hub of communication regarding VISION
Business Education and Workforce Development
Goal:
- To provide ongoing business education and development for the business community of Miramar & Pembroke Pines through a variety of venues and funding sources
Actions:
- Survey the business membership on a regular basis in order to stay on top of the educational and developmental needs of the cities
- Stay in touch with the cities in order to partner/enhance the already developed programs and meet the needs of the business community at large
- Search for funding sources that may be available to support or sustain business education / workforce development needs
- Schedule seminars and/or workshops that address the identified needs of the business members on a regular basis
- Market the services provided at the chamber office through the certified business analyst
- Create a marketing piece that will market these services
- Stay in touch with the economic development committees of the cities and their agenda
- Stay in touch with the governmental affairs committee of the chamber
